Packing Reminder

Luggage space is limited, especially in all rear storage areas. Pack light with soft‑sided bags. Hard suitcases are welcome but may not fit — we can store them if needed.

Coastal Highlights – Tutukaka & Beyond

Take the scenic route north from Whangaparāoa to the Tutukaka Coast, passing through Langs Beach and Waipu Cove. Both are stunning spots to stretch your legs or enjoy a swim. We recommend stopping at for great coffee and relaxed beach vibes.

Whangaparāoa to Tutukaka

This route takes you north via SH1, through Warkworth and Whangarei, with optional coastal detours. Approximate drive time: 2 hr 20 min.

Tutukaka Freedom Camping Spots

Here are some great freedom camping spots in the Tutukaka area — all listed on CamperMate:

Hatfields Beach Reserve – Freedom Camping

Just north of Orewa, Hatfields Beach Reserve offers peaceful beach access and public toilets. Overnight parking is permitted only in the circular driveway, as shown in the below map. Please park respectfully and avoid blocking access. Across the road, you’ll find public toilets and a dump station — perfect for the night before returning your van.

Coromandel – Scenic Coastal Route & Freedom Camping Gems

This is one of the most beautiful drives in New Zealand — you could spend a week exploring or skip a few spots depending on your timing. I’ve included all the freedom camping sites I love. Whangapoua is a must-do, but it’s popular, so arrive early. All others usually have plenty of space.

Paid Campsite Recommendations

These are some of our favourite paid stays — clean, well-located, and great value for money.

Leigh Central Motels & Campervan Park (Near Goat Island) A boutique campground with spotless facilities, cozy vibes, and the best kitchen/lounge setup I’ve seen! Right in the heart of Leigh village — walk to the pub, dairy, or head to Goat Island for snorkelling. Super clean, quiet, and very well-priced.

Brocks Place Matamata (Near Hobbiton) If you’re visiting Hobbiton, consider staying at Brocks Place — only $10 per person per night with hot showers and hotter views!

Athenree Hot Springs & Holiday Park (Near Waihi) A great place to relax with thermal pools and scenic surroundings — one of the cleanest campgrounds I’ve come across, and very reasonably priced too!
